APACS - the Association for Payment Clearing Services - was set up in 1985 as a non-statutory Association of major banks and building societies and has become the umbrella body at the heart of the UK payments industry. APACS provides the forum for discussion on non-competitive issues relating to money transmission.
Membership is open to any bank or building society operating in the UK, as well as to credit institutions based in other European Union and Group of 10 countries, provided that they are able to meet the objective membership criteria published by APACS.
One of APACS principal tasks is to manage the major UK payment clearing systems and to maintain and enhance their operational efficiency and financial integrity. This task is currently carried out by three operational clearing companies: (see separate entries)
Cheque and Credit Clearing Company - which oversees the paper clearings.
A range of other senior groups also operate under the umbrella of APACS:
In addition, APACS forecasts payment trends, conducts market research and maintains a large body of statistics. The Association also formulates payments industry standards.
